12th Avenue Street Festival Celebrates the Neighborhood

The 12th Avenue Street Festival celebrates it’s second year this Sunday, August 14th, 2011 from 12 noon until 6pm.  The event takes place in the street on 12th Avenue between E. Madison and E. Pike streets.  There will be nearly 40 booths representing the diversity of this neighborhood including restaurants, stores, studios, non-profit groups and  much more.  All restaurants will be offering a special dish for the event for $5 or less (and your friends at Cafe Presse will be there as well, serving Chilled Watermelon Soup with a Prawn, Basil, Corn and Sweet Pepper Salad…stop by and say hello.).   The Festival will also feature music and street performances.

The 2010 inaugural event was a lot of fun, but also a bit of a learning experience for me.  I was in charge of the music for the 2010 event, which featured busker-style musical street performances.  I spent the day coordinating with the 30-odd musicians, making sure they were at their stations throughout the Festival.  You might recall that the 2010 festival happened to coincide with the mini heat wave we had last year, and despite a hat, lots of sunscreen and water, I got a mild case of sunstroke.  If the forecast is correct, that will not be a problem this year.
