Goodbye to the Continental

Any one who has spent time as a student at the University of Washington or as a resident of the U District will know the Continental Pastry Shop.  It has been a bedrock of the stretch of University Avenue between 45th and 47th for over 40 years.  Many, many restaurants have come and gone during that time,  as the fortunes of the Ave have waxed and waned, but the  faces of  Helen, George and Demetre have been as inextricable from the texture of the neighborhood as their faki, loukaniko and Greek fries.

Seems like the Continental has always been there, at least as long as I  can remember, which is to say, quite a long while.

However, as recently announced on the restaurant’s Facebook page, the Continental will close for the last time on June 30th, 2013.  The reason, according to Demetre, is so that they all can have “some rest and relaxation with their families”.  Well they have certainly all earned that, and no mistake.

Best of Luck to everyone at the Continental…you will be missed.

  1. Yes, absolutely! I am so sorry to see them go. They all deserve a wonderful retirement after all they have given the community for these 40 plus years! Thank you Continental!!
