Lets see now, how many years has it been since I first participated in the Sunset Supper in the Market? Well, the first time I was the chef at Campagne restaurant, so it must be over 12 years, maybe more. This year’s Sunset Supper in the Market is the 16th year running for this event and it takes place on August 19, 2011.
If you have not heard of the Sunset Supper in the Market, I would encourage you to look into it. Every August, on a Friday evening, Pike Place is closed to traffic so that it can play host to one immense party. There is music and dancing (I understand that this year’s featured musical performer will be the Dudley Manlove Quartet) and one long communal table up the middle of the street. Food is prepared by a long list of Seattle chefs, myself included, and much of the raw material used to prepare the meal is donated by local farmers and produce vendors. Wine, beer and cocktails are also donated by local companies, with many of the actual vintners and brew masters on hand to serve guests.
It’s always a memorable evening and all the money raised goes to the worthy programs supported by the Market Foundation, including the Pike Market Medical Clinic, Senior Center, Childcare & Preschool and the Downtown Food Bank.
I am not sure yet what I will be cooking at this year’s Sunset Supper, but last year we did Mousse au Chocolat with fresh local strawberries. Nothing wrong with that.
