We recently took a trip to Brittany, a first time for us, and more specifically to the region known as Finistère because it is literally where the land finishes. After a morning visit the most eastern tip of France at Pointe Saint-Matheu, we an excellent lunch at a restaurant called An Atoll near the fishing port of Guilvinec. The restaurant’s setting is sublime, perched on a rise a few kilometers outside the town, facing the Atlantic, with nothing between you and North America but a strip of rocky beach and a few clouds. When I called to reserve, I had roughly the following conversation with the person who answered the phone (the translation is mine):

Me: I would like to reserve a table for two for lunch today, please.
He: You know that the only thing that we serve is lobster, right?
Me: OK not a problem, I would like to go ahead and reserve, then I will take a look at your menu online. If there is a problem, I will call to cancel.
He: We don’t have a website. And there is not really a menu. We serve fresh Breton lobster, broiled, with salad and frites. That’s all.
Me: That sounds good to me.
He: And we don’t allow dogs. And there is no children’s menu.
Me: OK for me, we don’t have a dog, or kids.
He: So shall I go ahead and make the reservation for you?
Me: Yes please.

When we arrived, the staff was much nicer than the person on the phone (to be fair, you could tell by his voice that he had long experience with people with dogs wanting something other than lobster and hoping for a kid’s menu). The lobster was excellent, as where the salad and frites, and the menu actually offered two choices for starters and several for dessert!
